A Rotary Petrol Lawnmower – Best Choice For a Family Garden
By Alison Graham.
If you are considering buying a Petrol Lawnmower, no doubt you are wondering which of the huge number of models on the market would be right for your needs. If you have a family, with children who love to play on the lawn, or you entertain a lot, having friends around for barbecues and so on in the summer, your best choice for mower type must be a Rotary one.
The reasons for this are twofold:-
1. Family or recreation lawns should not be cut too short. If they are, what will happen is that your poor lawn will develop bald patches that will just turn to mud when it rains. A Rotary Lawnmower does not cut your lawn as short as a Cylinder Lawnmower (often commonly called a Reel Lawnmower).
2. Family lawns are not usually ‘Bowling Green’ smooth. Cylinder mowers do not cope well with uneven surfaces and can ground on stones, damaging the blades with expensive consequences. Rotary Lawnmowers on the other hand, cope much better with uneven ground, partly because of the fact that they do not cut as short and partly because of the difference in design.
A Rotary Lawnmower works with rotating blades spinning parallel to the ground at the cutting height you set. All but the very cheapest of Rotary Mowers have an adjustable cutting height and it is worth investing in one that has this feature as you will want to leave your lawn slightly longer at different times of the year.
There are two types of Rotary Lawnmowers on the market, the first is the wheeled Rotary Mower and these are most suitable for slightly larger, more regular shaped areas of grass without too many obstacles to mow round as the four wheels make them slightly less easy to steer.
The second type of Rotary Mower is the Hover Mower that floats over the surface of your lawn on a cushion of air generated by the rapidly spinning blades. These are more suitable for smaller areas of lawn, areas with intricately shaped border edges or areas with lots of trees, shrubs or children’s play equipment as they are very easy to steer and can be moved from side to side and round in circles with no problem at all.
When choosing a Petrol Lawnmower, Rotary Mowers are the group with the largest number of models available so once you have decided on your budget, it should be easy to narrow down your choice of model once you have decided whether to go for a wheeled or a hover model.
